Introducing the National Future Fishermen Coalition (NFFC)

We’re excited to share the official launch of the National Future Fishermen Coalition (NFFC) — a first-of-its-kind national alliance dedicated to securing a vibrant future for commercial fishing by investing in the men and women who will take the wheel.

The next generation of fishermen are eager to step into their own wheelhouses and harvest incredible seafood for their families and communities. Yet the future is increasingly uncertain, and young people considering a fishing career face growing challenges. Rising costs, lack of training access, industry consolidation, dwindling access, development threats to working waterfront, aging infrastructure, and more are making it harder for new and young fishermen to enter or stay in the profession.

The NFFC brings together local and regional leaders to advocate for equitable access, workforce development, and long-term resilience in our fishing communities. These efforts will help ensure the legacy of commercial fishing continues to thrive.

The coalition includes founding partners from across the country, uniting behind a simple but powerful mission: to support, empower, and equip the next generation of commercial fishermen to thrive. MCFA's Fisheries Policy Coordinator, Emily Coffin, played a pivotal role in the creation and early development of the Coalition.

I want to do what I can so that other young people have the confidence to pursue a happy and stable life in commercial fishing.

Support networks like this are essential to creating a vibrant commercial fishing industry for the future. We're proud to help amplify this new initiative and work alongside similar organizations to strengthen opportunities for the fishermen of tomorrow.
