On the evening of December 26, several buildings on Custom House Wharf in Portland were involved in a three-alarm fire. Thanks to our first responders, no lives were lost — but multiple fishermen and fishing businesses were affected. In addition to the buildings themselves, they lost gear, equipment, tools, supplies, and more.
The community immediately wanted to help. Local fishermen asked MCFA to step up and create a fund to give that desire to help a meaningful place to go, and make sure that funds would be used for the benefit of the fishing community in Portland.
Of course we said yes. And hundreds of caring individuals and businesses said yes, too. At the time this blog was posted, the community has helped raise $72,958 to support the fishermen and fishing businesses impacted by this fire.
We are still learning the full impact of these losses, and the need among these fishermen. As we continue to gather information, we are still determining exactly how funds will be distributed — but we do know that every dollar will go towards rebuilding and supporting those affected.Â
MCFA values honesty and transparency, and we promise to be as open as possible in this effort. Stay tuned for more updates as the relief effort progresses.Â
